Meet a Real Estate expert: Tony Eden
For the latest instalment of our Meet the Team series, we speak with Tony Eden, Head of Specialist Commercial Banking and Real Estate Finance.
What is your banking specialism?
For the last 12 years, I have focused on leading commercial trading and real estate teams within business banking, commercial banking, and corporate banking. I have worked in the finance industry for 21 years.
How are we supporting clients at the moment?
In the real estate investment sector, there is currently an increased demand for yield with individuals and institutions chasing the same asset class. The purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) space is a prime example of this. We are also seeing co-living and the build to rent (BtR) space increasing as individuals look for affordable accommodation in cities and developers/investors look to provide this service.
At Arbuthnot Latham, we supported a record number of clients in residential portfolios and build to rent schemes in 2021. We also continue to support investment in commercial real estate, although as we know from the non-essential retail sector in particular, the high street continues to see many challenges which were expedited by the pandemic.
What do you think sets Arbuthnot Latham apart in the market?
Having previously worked in large banking institutions, I saw an increasing move towards call centre operating models and a reduction in service levels to SMEs, who are a major contributor to the UK economy.
At Arbuthnot Latham, the approach is different – the commercial offering is relationship-led supported by modern technology. Our credit policies and systems have been designed to provide high levels of support for clients.
Over the last six years, we have supported clients with our banking and lending services, and we have grown the total assets in the commercial bank from zero to £1.4bn.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Having a five-year old boy, the weekends are spent mostly driving between sport training, repairing my DIY attempts from the previous weekend, and trying to spend as much time with the family as possible.
