Exclusive Interview -
Inside London Tech Week: A conversation with founding partner Russ Shaw CBE
In the lead-up to the London Tech Week, Ben Sheeran, Head of Tech Commercial Banking at Arbuthnot Latham, had the unique opportunity to sit down with Russ Shaw CBE, founder of Tech London Advocates and Global Tech Advocates and founding partner of London Tech Week.
“London Tech Week is a rare chance to explore and discover the latest trends and innovations shaping the tech landscape,” Russ emphasised, setting the stage for an event brimming with possibilities.
As we delved into the highlights of the upcoming event, Russ hinted at the opening ceremony. “Let us just say we have a significant figure lined up to kickstart the festivities,” he shared with a playful grin.
“Attendees are in for a surprise, that is for sure!”
With a move to the larger Olympia venue and a lineup of engaging fringe events, attendees can expect a week filled with groundbreaking insights and transformative discussions. “It promises to be our most exciting yet,” Russ affirmed.
Exploring cutting-edge themes and innovations
Russ anticipates the event to be a melting pot of topics, from AI to sustainability. London Tech Week is set to ignite discussions on pivotal tech issues.
“Everyone is really buzzed about AI and generative AI,” Russ explains. “What does it mean? What are its practical applications? How can companies use it as a productivity tool for their employees?” Russ emphasises the growing interest in AI, which is particularly evident through events like the AI Summit, hosted by Informa during London Tech Week. “Every year, that event gets busier and busier,” he notes, predicting an exceptionally bustling turnout this year fuelled by the curiosity surrounding AI.
In addition to AI, Russ anticipates a focus on themes such as climate tech, net zero, and sustainability. “London has emerged as an important green finance hub,” he observes, suggesting that conversations around these topics will be prevalent throughout the week.
Beyond AI and sustainability, Russ foresees attention on emerging technologies like quantum computing, blockchain, crypto, and semiconductor advancements. “It will cover the spectrum of emerging tech,” he remarks, emphasising the comprehensive nature of the discussions.
Russ underscores the importance of diversity and inclusion in the tech sector, indicating that such topics will also feature prominently. With various stages and spaces at Olympia catering to different aspects of the tech ecosystem, Russ emphasises the inclusive nature of the event. “All the key players in the ecosystem that you would expect, all mixing it up,” he concludes, highlighting the dynamic and collaborative atmosphere that defines London Tech Week.
Looking ahead: London Tech Week in years to come
As London Tech Week continues to evolve and grow, Russ emphasises the importance of maintaining the event's unique atmosphere amidst expansion.
“While we aim to grow and attract more attendees, we remain committed to preserving the intimate atmosphere that allows for genuine interactions and networking,” Russ explained.
Reflecting on the event's growth, Russ highlights the increasing international engagement. Last year, there were 30,000 attendees, 40% of whom were from overseas. “This year, we are going to see even more international participation,” Russ noted.
Despite its global reach, Russ emphasises that London Tech Week will retain its personalised touch. “It is not the scale of a South by Southwest or CES, but it has significant scale. It has great global attraction, but there is still also a personalised feel to it,” he remarked.
Russ envisions London Tech Week continually adapting to reflect the ever-changing landscape of technology and entrepreneurship.
“Our goal is to create an event that showcases the latest advancements and serves as a platform for diverse voices and perspectives,” Russ emphasised. “London Tech Week is not just a gathering; it is a catalyst for positive change and collaboration.”
Russ concludes the interview by saying, “As we look ahead, our mission is clear – to cultivate an ecosystem where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to shaping the future of technology.”
